This prize was awarded for an outstanding research publication, or a series of closely related publications on the topic of Applied Mathematics for Dr. Aretakis’ groundbreaking work on instability in extremal black holes (what has come to be known as Aretakis instability), conservation laws for wave equations, and their long-term behaviour in asymptotically flat backgrounds.

Six top mathletes selected for Math Team Canada 2020
(Jul 10, 2020) OTTAWA, Ontario — The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce that Canada’s six top math students are on their way to compete at the 61st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The Olympiad was scheduled to take place in St. Petersburg, Russia in July 2020, but because of the global pandemic it will take place on September 21-22 and Math Team Canada’s participation will be virtual.

Record Number of Students Write the 2018 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge
(Jan 18, 2019) More than 8,000 students wrote the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) on November 8, 2018. In partnership with the Award Schede Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN – Beijing), more than 900 high school students in China registered to write the COMC this year.

(Jul 26, 2017) Math Team Canada 2017 returns from the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with five medals, and one honourable mention. Team leader James Rickards says the 2017 IMO was “the most difficult IMO yet; only 7 out of more than 600 students obtained marks on problem #3.”
