2019 EGMO Team Canada
OTTAWA, Ontario — The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce the members of Canada’s team to compete in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), in Kyiv, Ukraine April 7-13. 2019 EGMO Team Canada is:
- Katie Forbes – [Edmonton, AB]
- Anna Krokhine – [Toronto, ON]
- Siyu Elaine Liu – [Oakville, ON]
- Zixian Ruby Wei – [Charlottetown, PE]
Each student competes individually to solve six questions, in a competition lasting two days, four and a half hours each day. The students were chosen largely based on the results of the 2018 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) written in November, as well as a Team Selection Test that was sent to the top 15 girls from the COMC.
The team is led by CMS Mathematical Competitions Chair, Professor Dorette Pronk (Dalhousie) and Deputy Leader Sarah Sun (GoldSpot Discoveries Inc.) who served as Leader and Deputy Leader for EGMO Math Team Canada in Italy in 2018.
The Canadian EGMO Team will be in training at the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, Toronto from February 22-24. In addition to Dorette Pronk and Sarah Sun, James Rickards (McGill) will be assisting with the training. An observer from the University of Waterloo will also accompany the team to the Ukraine.
Professor Pronk and Mrs. Sun are delighted that Canada is participating once again in the EGMO.
“We are extremely excited to take this team of bright young girls from across Canada and showcase them at the European Girls Math Olympiad. There they will be able to share their talents and love of math on the world stage. We are proud of their creativity, passion and hard work, and extremely pleased to continue showing Canada’s continued support of women in STEM.”
The Canadian Mathematical Society is very grateful for the significant support received from the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo once again, and for the support of the Actuarial Foundation of Canada as well as the Samuel Beatty Fund. This support enabled the Society to send a Canadian team to this important event celebrating girls and STEM.
About the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO)
The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad is an international mathematics competition similar in style to the International Mathematical Olympiad, with two papers taken on consecutive days. Participating countries send teams consisting of four female mathematicians of school age. The EGMO was first held in 2012 in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The 2020 EGMO will be held in the Netherlands.
About the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS)
The CMS is the main national organization whose goal is to promote and advance the discovery, learning and application of mathematics. The Society’s activities cover the whole spectrum of mathematics including: scientific meetings, research publications, and the promotion of excellence in mathematics competitions that recognize outstanding student achievements.
