Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC)

For details about the 2022 Competition, click the banner above.

The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) is Canada’s premier national mathematics competition open to any student with an interest in and grasp of high school math. The purpose of the COMC is to encourage students to explore, discover, and learn more about mathematics and problem solving. The competition serves to provide teachers with a unique student enrichment activity during the fall term.

Approximately 80 top-ranking students from the COMC and the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad Qualifying Repêchage (CMOQR) will be invited to write the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO). Based on the results from the COMC, the CMO and other national and international mathematics competitions and camps, the Canadian Mathematical Society IMO Committee will then select six students as part of Math Team Canada to travel to, and compete in, the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

The top COMC female contestants will also qualify to be part of Girls’ Math Team Canada to represent Canada at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO). EGMO is an international mathematics competition.

Depending on their grade level and performance, students participating in the COMC will also have the opportunity to be considered for university scholarships, get invited to math camps, garner awards, and win prizes.

The CMS is very grateful for the support from our Competition Sponsors and Partners.

Date of the COMC

The 2022 COMC will be held on Thursday, October 27th in Canada and the Americas (anywhere in North/South American time zones), and on Friday, October 28th elsewhere in the world.

Registration

Registration for the COMC will open on this web page on September 6th . The registration deadline is Tuesday, October 11th for paper copies of the exam, and October 24th for digital copies of the exam. The COMC can only be written in-person. This assists us in ensuring the integrity of the exam.

The COMC can be written at your school or an approved Official Writing Centre. If your school or institution is not writing the competition, you can write the COMC at one of our Canadian partner university writing centres. Click here, and simply choose the university closest to you in the drop down menu and follow the instructions for payment. Once the exam is paid, your name and reservation will be added to that university. If you can’t find a university that is close to you, please email contests@cms.math.ca and we will try to find accommodations for you to write the COMC. We will send an email closer to the date with information on how to get to your examination room at the university.

Problem of the Week

Beginning in the first week of September, the CMS will post a sample problem to familiarize you with the kinds of questions you might find on a COMC exam. The solution is posted the following week when the next problem is posted. See the Problem of the Week page.
