Professor Jacob Tsimerman to receive the 2019 Coxeter-James Prize
OTTAWA – The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce that Professor Jacob Tsimerman (Toronto) has been named the recipient of the 2019 Coxeter-James Prize for his exceptional contributions to mathematics research. Tsimerman will receive his award and present a prize lecture during the CMS Winter Meeting in Toronto, Ontario, December 7-10, 2019.
Jacob Tsimerman is an outstanding young mathematician who earned his doctorate in Pure Mathematics at Princeton in 2011 under the supervision of P. Sarnak. His work is a mixture of transcendence theory, analytic number theory and arithmetic geometry. Early in his career, Dr. Tsimerman obtained remarkable results related to Andre-Oort conjecture. This conjecture is concerned with the behavior of collections of special points inside Shimura varieties.
Dr. Tsimerman made several break through advancements towards a proof of the conjecture and removing unnecessary (Riemann) hypothesis conditions. He built a reputation for his creativity and insight in this area and his work has been recognized by many honours, including being a Gold medalist at the 2003 and 2004 International Mathematical Olympiad; recipient of the André Aisensdadt Prize; recipient of the Sastra Ramanujan Prize; being named a Sloan Fellow; and being invited to the 2018 ICM as a Speaker.
Currently, Dr. Tsimerman is an Associate Professor at University of Toronto’s Department of Mathematics.
About the Coxeter-James Prize
The Coxeter-James Prize was inaugurated in 1978 to recognize young mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions to mathematical research. The award is named for two former CMS presidents, Donald Coxeter, who is recognized as one of the world’s best geometers, and Ralph Duncan James, who was a great contributor to mathematical development in Canada.
