The CMS Honours the Memory of Dr. Nicole Tomczak-Jaegermann
The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Nicole Tomczak-Jaegermann (CMS member and Fellow of Royal Society of Canada) on the evening of Friday, June 17th.
Nicole was a distinguished mathematician who contributed many deep results in Banach space theory, a branch of Functional Analysis. She held many recognitions, some of which include an invited 1998 ICM talk, the 1999 Krieger-Nelson Prize, and the 2013 Sierpinski medal. What’s more, Nicole supervised several students and post-docs, who have themselves become successful.
Nicole was active in the Canadian mathematical community, having served on the PIMS Board of Directors, the Fields Institute Advisory Panel, the Scientific Board of BIRS, as well as the adjudicating committees for the CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize and Canada Council Killam Research Fellowship.
The Chair of Mathematics and Statistics department at the University of Alberta shared:
Nicole was a pillar in the Dept. of Math and Stat. Sciences at UofA, helping to grow the Functional Analysis group to one of international significance.
The CMS sends its condolences to her family and to the mathematical community as a whole.
