Call for COMC Markers

Dear members of the Canadian Mathematical Society,

The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is recruiting markers to bolster the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC). As interest in this prestigious competition continues to surge, the CMS seeks math professors and/or mathematicians, retired or active, willing to volunteer their expertise and time to shape and guide the next generation of mathematical minds in Canada and across the world. Our aim is to create a pool of qualified, reliable markers who can lend a helping hand if the existing group of markers needs it.

Volunteers will be able to work remotely using the Crowdmark platform and determine when and how much they are willing to do (typically between 10 and 30 hours of work in total), supported by the help of a group coordinator and a detailed marking guide.  This marking effort takes place during the month of November.

The COMC, an annual mathematics competition hosted by the Canadian Mathematical Society, stands as a beacon of mathematical excellence, drawing talented young minds from diverse backgrounds to test their problem-solving skills on a global platform. This esteemed challenge not only nurtures mathematical talent but also fosters a passion for critical thinking and innovation among participants. The COMC is also the only way to be invited to the CMS’ exclusive training camps and to compete internationally as part of Math Team Canada.

Volunteer markers play a pivotal role in the success of the COMC, meticulously evaluating and scoring participants’ solutions. Their expertise and guidance serve as the cornerstone of this challenge, ensuring a rigorous and fair assessment process that cultivates excellence and encourages growth.

Math professors, retirees and mathematicians interested in volunteering as markers for the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge are asked to please contact Termeh Kousha at tkousha@cms.math.ca

Cordially,
