CANADIAN TEAM CHOSEN FOR 2024 EUROPEAN GIRLS’ MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD

OTTAWA, Ontario – The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is excited to reveal the members of Girls’ Math Team Canada, set to compete in the 2024 European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO). For the seventh year in a row, the CMS is proud to send a Canadian team to this important event celebrating girls in STEM.

Introducing the EGMO Math Team Canada for 2024:

  • Emily Ma (Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute, grade 12)
  • Emma Tang (University of Toronto Schools, grade 11)
  • Joanna Xie (Abbey Park High School, grade 12)
  • Katrina Liu (Canyon Crest Academy, grade 9)

The 2024 EGMO will be held in Tskaltubo, Georgia, between April 11 and 17. Each student will compete individually to solve six questions, in a competition lasting two days, four and a half hours each day. The students were chosen based on the results of the 2023 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge written in October, as well as the EGMO Team Selection Test (TST).

The 2024 EGMO team is led by Kate Tretiakova (McMaster University) and Deputy Leader Kathryn Dou (MIT).

EGMO Team 2024 - 1

The Chair of the CMS Mathematical Competitions Committee, Dr. Dorette Pronk, eagerly anticipates Girls’ Math Team Canada’s participation in the 2024 EGMO:

“I am impressed with the commitment and talent that these four girls have already displayed to earn their place on the team, and I hope that their participation in the EGMO contest and their interactions with other women in mathematics from around the globe will further inspire them in their study and career choices.”

The CMS wishes to acknowledge and thank Jane Street for its generous support, which has played a pivotal role in empowering these talented young mathematicians to represent Canada on this prestigious international stage. Jane Street’s commitment to fostering excellence in STEM aligns well with our mission to cultivate and celebrate the next generation of mathematicians.
