Six Top Mathletes Selected for Math Team Canada 2022

OTTAWA, Ontario — The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce that Canada’s top six math students will compete at the 63rd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The Olympiad is scheduled to take place in Oslo, Norway in July 2022.

The following are the members of Math Team Canada 2022:

Zixiang (Peter) Zhou, London Central Secondary School, London, ON
Evan Lu, Vincent Massey Secondary School, Windsor, ON
Warren Bei, Vancouver Learning Network, Vancouver, BC
Kaixin Wang, Magee Secondary School, Vancouver, BC
Kevin Min, Cupertino High School, CA, USA
James Yang, Iroquois Ridge High School, Oakville, ON

The 2022 Team Leader is Caleb Ji (Columbia), and the Deputy Leader is Alex Song (Citadel LLC).

Each student competes individually to solve six questions, in a competition lasting two days, four and a half hours each day. The six students were chosen by the Canadian Mathematical Society IMO Committee, based on the results of the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (November 2021), the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (March 2022) and other national and international mathematics competitions.

The chair of the IMO Committee and former Math Team Canada leader James Rickards (McGill) shared his wishes for the team:

“Congratulations to the team for overcoming yet another year of pandemic challenges to qualify for the IMO. I wish them all the best and hope that they enjoy the well-deserved opportunity to compete at in person for the first time since 2019.”

The Canadian Mathematical Society wishes the team best of luck in the upcoming competition and training sessions that precede it.
