Canadian Mathematical Society sends Canadian team to European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad
OTTAWA, ON – The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce the members of the Canadian team to compete in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO). EGMO Math Team Canada is:
- Kaylee Ji, Hackensack, NJ
- Yfan (Emma) Tang, Toronto, ON
- Allison Tsypin, Westmount, QC
- Jennifer Wang, Toronto, ON
Each student competes individually to solve six questions, in a competition lasting two days, four and a half hours each day. The students were chosen largely based on the results of the 2020 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge written in October and two team selection tests, one in January and one in February 2021.
The team is led by Mariya Sardarli (University of Chicago) and Deputy Leader Elnaz Hessami Pilehrood (University of Toronto). Former EGMO Olympian, Anna Krokhine will also be the team observer.
Mariya Sardarli and Elnaz Hessami Pilehrood are delighted that Canada is participating once again in the EGMO.
“We have an amazing team this year and I’m excited to work on interesting math problems with the girls!” said Hessami Pilehrood.
The Canadian Mathematical Society is grateful for the generous support received from the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo once again, and for the support of the RBC Foundation’s Future Launch program, Actuarial Foundation of Canada and Samuel Beatty Fund. Their generous support has enabled the CMS to send a Canadian team to this important event celebrating girls and STEM.
This year, the EGMO will be held in a hybrid format in Kutaisi, Georgia. The Canadian Team will be writing the competition virtually from Toronto.
About the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO)
The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad is an international mathematics competition similar in style to the International Mathematical Olympiad, with two papers taken on consecutive days. Participating countries send teams consisting of four female mathematicians of school age. The EGMO was first held in 2012 in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The 2022 EGMO will be held in Eger, Hungary.
