Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) and Carleton University Summer Math Camp

Each week at camp is a brand new adventure! We’ll be using different materials and exploring different topics each time, so no two weeks are the same.

The Canadian Mathematical Society is proud to offer two unique weeks of math camp designed to spark curiosity and build lasting friendships. In week one, campers will explore the world of probability, financial literacy, and strategic puzzles.

Week two focuses on the building blocks of math and technology, where students explore numbers and shapes through algebra, patterns, and geometry. This year, we have enhanced our curriculum to include coding logic, allowing campers to use sequences and debugging to solve problems and understand mathematical concepts in a whole new way.

As the national non-profit voice for mathematics in Canada, the CMS has spent decades creating supportive environments where children can develop a passion for math through challenges and positive role models.

This camp is open to all students who wish to discover the joy of mathematics in a fun and collaborative setting.

July 13-17, 2026 - Math Adventures

In this class, students will become confident in their math skills through the use of manipulatives, games, and creative play. Each session begins with engaging math stories that spark curiosity and discussion. By collaborating with peers, students will practice everything from basic arithmetic, probability, and solving exciting puzzles, navigating mazes, and cracking secret codes.

We will also explore early financial literacy in a way that feels like an adventure! Students will learn the value of money, while “Bank Account” games show them the magic of how interest helps their savings grow. Students will even dive into probability by learning about chance and likelihood through exciting games of strategy. Each day concludes with a camp favorite: our high-energy competition questions, where teamwork and quick thinking take center stage!

In this class, students transform math from a school subject into a powerful tool for solving mysteries and building businesses! Each session begins with Math Mysteries: engaging stories and puzzles that challenge students to use logic and strategy to solve complex problems. By collaborating with a team, students will tackle advanced arithmetic, explore logic and probability and crack ciphers.

We will pull back the curtain on the adult world to see how “big purchases” like houses work by exploring loans and interest. Students will play strategy games that teach the difference between a risky gamble and a smart investment, and discover compound interest – the “mathematical superpower” of the banking world. The day wraps up with our legendary competition questions, where students put their mental math and teamwork to the ultimate test!

This class is for students who are mastering their current math skills and looking to jump ahead to the next level. If you are interested in refining your understanding of math and ready to learn the concepts coming up in the next school year, this is the class for you! Delve deeper into these concepts to solve intricate riddles and develop critical thinking skills.

Investigate probability through simulations, data analysis, and real world applications. Learn about independent and dependent events, conditional probability and chance. Did someone say game theory? Explore the strategic aspects of probability in games like chess, checkers and card games. Develop decision making skills and learn to optimize your chances of success. Use programming tools to simulate probability experiments and explore complex scenarios. Beyond the board, we will apply these decision-making skills to the world of finance – exploring how compound interest acts as a “wealth engine” and simulating purchases to understand the math of loans and interest.

August 10-14, 2026 - Numbers, Shapes and Codes

Each day begins with engaging math stories and logic puzzles that spark curiosity and set the stage for deep discussion. This high-energy class invites students to explore math through games, building, and creative play. Participants will strengthen their skills in patterns and number relationships and geometry by uncovering number patterns, investigating shapes in nature, and constructing 3D structures. To expand their problem-solving toolkit, students will use coding logic to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts, learning to alter and debug code to ensure it generates the expected outcome. We will explore how changing a sequence of instructions can sometimes produce the same result and sometimes produce a different outcome entirely, like in subtraction or directional code. By predicting outcomes and visualizing movement in space, students will master the art of debugging. Each day concludes with our camp favorite: high-energy competition questions where teamwork and quick thinking take center stage!

Each day kicks off with logic paradoxes and math-based mysteries that challenge students to think critically and debate their solutions. This high-energy class moves beyond basic play into strategic and competitive problem-solving.

Participants will sharpen algebraic thinking and advanced geometry by analyzing growth patterns, calculating the properties of symmetry and tessellation, and engineering 3D structures. To expand their toolkit, students will dive into algorithmic logic, learning not just to debug code, but to make the code shorter/clearer using loops. We will investigate the power of conditional logic (choice points/different pathways) and loops, exploring how the order of operations—much like in multi-step equations—can create elegant solutions or unexpected glitches.

By mastering spatial visualization and predictive modeling, students will become expert “code-breakers.” Each day concludes with our competition-style challenges.

This class is for students ready to take their math skills to the next level. If you want to tackle complex challenges while having fun, this is the class for you! We emphasize strategic problem-solving that will push your thinking and sharpen your logic.

Discover the hidden relationships between numbers and master the building blocks of algebra and logic. Students will solve sophisticated equations through fun challenges and “math hacks.” To expand our toolkit, we will introduce coding logic, exploring how variables and sequences allow us to automate patterns and solve problems faster. Explore the properties of 2D and 3D shapes by diving into architecture and structural engineering. Through hands-on building projects, we will calculate area and perimeter to create stable structures. We will introduce coding logic to help us automate patterns, exploring how variables and input-output work in both math and programming to solve problems more efficiently.

Explore how math is used in technology by studying algorithms – the step-by-step instructions that power our world. Using manipulatives and puzzles, students will learn to “debug” complex sequences. We will explore how changing a single instruction can produce the same result or a different outcome entirely, teaching students to visualize the logic behind every move before they make it. Each day concludes with a camp favorite: our high-stakes competition questions where teamwork and quick thinking take center stage!
