The First Canadian Mathematical Gray Jay Competition Was a Huge Success!
OTTAWA, ON – The Canadian Mathematical Society, CMS is pleased to announce the results of the 2020 Canadian Mathematical Gray Jay Competition. More than 2200 students wrote the Gray Jay on October 8 and 9, 2020. For the 2020 Gray Jay Competition, in partnership with the Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (ASDAN – Beijing), more than 100 students in China registered to write the competition. This year, the CMS formed a new partnership with the Thai-Canadian Alumni Association which ran our competitions in Thailand with great success! Many Thai students were excited to participate in a Canadian competition for the first time and more than 200 students in in Thailand wrote the competition.
Due to the global pandemic, the Gray Jay was offered in two formats this year, paper and virtual. This allowed for students who were participating in remote learning to be able to participate.
CMS-Gray Jay Committee Chair, Shawn Godin was very pleased with the first contest:
We hope that the Gray Jay Contest will become an enjoyable Fall tradition for many students across Canada and around the world.
Dorette Pronk, CMS-Competitions Committee Chair also said she is glad to see this extent of interest:
I am very pleased with the large number of students who participated in this fun and challenging contest this fall and I am excited to celebrate the results of the hard work of these young problem solvers. This contest shows the diversity of our nation through problems based in the various cultures present and I am proud that it is also being written by a large number of students in Asia.
More than 170 high schools participated in the competition, which was marked electronically using Crowdmark again this year.

About the Canadian Mathematical Gray Jay Competition
Canadian Mathematical Gray Jay Competition is a new Canadian math competition open to students in grades K-8, with questions based primarily on grades 5-8 curriculum. This competition has been created by mathematicians from across Canada.
The problems are meant to be a fun fall activity for students and teachers to complement their math curriculum and build students’ problem solving skills. The Gray Jay will offer engaging problems that will allow for discussion after the competition and get students excited about math. The competition will have 15 questions which take place over 90 minutes. It will consist of 3 blocks of 5 questions with an increasing level of difficulty from beginning to end.
