The CMS Honours the Memory of Dr. Borwein

The Canadian Mathematical Society is saddened by the news of Dr. David Borwein’s passing. Dr. Borwein served as president of the CMS from 1985 to 1987. He was the head of the mathematics department at the University of Western Ontario from 1967 to 1989. With over 125 publications, his contributions to Canadian mathematics are extensive and include acting as a referee for a number of mathematical journals, serving as a reviewer for NSERC and NSF proposals, and being actively involved in the committees and programs of the Canadian Mathematical Society.

In 2004, the CMS created a new award in his honour, the David Borwein Distinguished Career Award, to recognize individuals who have made exceptional, broad, and continued contributions to Canadian mathematics.

He will be missed by the CMS and by the Canadian mathematical community.
