The CMS Honours the Memory of Bruce Shawyer
The Canadian Mathematical Society is saddened by the news of Dr. Bruce Shawyer’s passing. A dedicated member of the Canadian Mathematical Society, Dr. Shawyer coached several Canadian Teams at the International Mathematical Olympiad and spearheaded the successful initiative for Canada to host the IMO in 1995. He was Editor-in-Chief for Crux Mathematicorum with Mathematical Mayhem (1996-2001) as well as for ATOM (A Taste of Mathematics) (2003-2011).
Dr. Shawyer was awarded the CMS Adrian Pouliot Award in 1996 for his contributions to mathematics education in Canada, and in 2019 he was named a CMS Fellow.
David Pike (Memorial, CMS President Elect and a colleague of Dr. Shawyer, remembers his impact on the lives of aspiring mathematicians:
Throughout his career he positively impacted the lives and careers of many mathematicians, always instilling a love of mathematics. His mentorship and advice were always welcome and sage. He was particularly fond of working with undergraduate students and helping to provide them with opportunities, including the annual invitational to his splendid backyard garden.
He will be missed by the CMS and the Canadian mathematical community. Our thoughts are with the loved ones he left behind.
