The CMS Inclusion in Mathematics Prize is awarded every year to the organizer (or organizers) of an association, event, series of events, or other effort furthering the goals of equity, diversity, and inclusion in mathematics in Canada.
The award will go to an individual or group of individuals who have furthered equity, diversity, and inclusion and/or developed a more welcoming and safer environment and/or worked to dismantle racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression and discrimination within the mathematical community in Canada.
More than one award may be given in different categories (e.g. to individual contributions by students/postdocs or by faculty/staff, or to group efforts), if the committee judges it appropriate.
Purpose of the award
The award has two main purposes.
- To recognize and reward outstanding efforts to support and promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in mathematics, especially within Canada.
- To share and publicize ideas for such efforts and to encourage others to try similar initiatives at their own universities and in their own networks.
The second purpose is the motivation for the award event to include public presentations from top nominees and their work.
Sharing Our Initiatives: Short Presentations of Committee-Selected Activities
Each fall, the CMS would like to create an online showcase of the top initiatives undertaken by our community. The goal is to foster the exchange of good practices and to encourage people to consider further intitiatives.
The selection committee will therefore extend invitations to the Prize recipient and several of the short-listed candidates to create a short online presentation (10 – 15 minutes). This collection of presentations will then comprise the core of an online event of 1-2 hours hosted by the Women in Math Committee for the broader mathematical community, in order to maximize impact and share these initiatives within the mathematical community.
Prize
The recipient(s) will receive a commemorative plaque.
Selection Committee
The recipient(s) is/are chosen by representatives from the Equity, Diversity and Inclusiveness Committee and the Women in Mathematics Committee, based on the strength, merit and demonstrated impact of the nominated activities.
