The 2017 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge — Nov 2/3

The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) is Canada's premier national mathematics competition that is open to any student with an interest in and grasp of high school math. The purpose of the COMC is to encourage students to explore, discover, and learn more about mathematics and problem solving. The competition serves to provide teachers with a unique student enrichment activity during the fall term.

Approximately the top 50 students from the COMC will be invited to write the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO). Students who excel in the CMO will have the opportunity to be selected as part of Math Team Canada -- a small team of students who travel to compete in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Depending on grade level and performance, students participating in the COMC can also have opportunities to garner awards, to win prizes, to be considered for scholarships, and to get invited to camps.

Returning for 2017: Teacher Appreciation Prizes

The 2017 COMC will be held on Thursday, November 2nd in Canada and the Americas (anywhere in North/South American time zones), and on Friday, November 3rd elsewhere in the world.

Registration for hard copy orders has now closed, but emailed (PDF) exams are still available.

Only until Friday Oct 27th: We continue to accept registrations for new orders or additional exams using our "Digital Exam" model. There are a number of differences between regular (print/hardcopy) orders and Digital orders:

  • Email: The exams and associated materials are all sent to you via email. You will receive everything by Tuesday Oct 31st. If you don't receive your ordered exams, you should phone us as soon as possible thereafter.
  • Online payment only: No cheques or money orders - only orders fully paid through Paypal by Oct 27th will be processed.
  • Double-sided: When you get your email with the exams, you must print these double-sided on letter or A4 paper for your students. As with the hard copy exams we sent, each page of each exam is bar-coded for machine processing, so no photocopies are acceptable.
  • Return shipping: It is your responsibility to ensure that the exams are couriered to the Canadian university marking center indicated in your instructions. They need to be given to the courier company no later than Monday, Nov. 6th and must arrive no later than Friday, Nov. 10th. All schools (even those in Canada) will have to make their own arrangements (and payment) with a reliable courier.

Teachers can register their schools for the COMC by clicking the link below. Registration costs CAD$15.00 per student in Canada and USD$20 per student for international participants.

The registration deadline for digital orders is Friday, Oct. 27th.

Problem of the Week!

During the weeks prior to the COMC competition, the CMS is happy to present our Problem of the Week (POTW). Please visit our POTW page for past problems and solutions. Here is the latest problem:

Do there exist a number $q \in \mathbb N$ and a prime number $p \in \mathbb N$ such that $$3^p+7^p = 2 \cdot 5^q?$$
