The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) is a regulatory agency that reports to the Ministry of the Attorney General. The AGCO is responsible for regulating the alcohol, gaming (casino, internet gaming, and charitable gaming), horse racing, and cannabis sectors in Ontario, in accordance with the principles of honesty and integrity, and in the public interest.

Do you employ a risk-based, data-driven approach to analysis? The Technology Regulation & iGaming Compliance Branch (TRCB) has an exciting new opportunity that may interest you! We are looking for the Statistical Mathematician who would perform mathematical and statistical assessments and testing of complex technology to ensure the technical integrity, security, safety, and accounting capability of the technology.

Reporting to the Manager, Technology Risk & Standards, the successful candidate will:

  • Perform mathematical and statistical assessments of games of chance and skill, random number generators, equipment, and system components.
  • Develop closed-form and Monte Carlo solutions to complex probability problems.
  • Design and develop software tools and solutions including specialized statistical assessment software tools.
  • Develop risk-based test methods to support the maintenance of high-quality product evaluations and operations.
  • Evaluate third-party testing methodologies and results from a mathematical and statistical perspective.
  • Construct new and improve existing risk indicators as part of a comprehensive technical and regulatory risk management framework.
  • Use Data Centric approach to identify high-risk areas that require AGCO assessment and make recommendations to mitigate risk.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics), or an equivalent combination of relevant work experience and education.
  • Knowledge, experience and demonstrated expertise of at least one general purpose (C++, Java, etc.), and one statistical programming language (R, Python, etc.).
  • Understanding and demonstrated experience of software development life cycle, including the ability to design, implement, and maintain custom software.
  • Advanced knowledge, demonstrated expertise, and experience in the following:
    o Randomness (and Random Number Generator – RNG)
    o Probability theory
    o Statistical and data analysis/analytics
    o Data Visualization & Dashboarding
    o Mathematical Modelling
    o Risk analysis and risk management
    o Research, innovation & development
    o Quality management
    o Project management
    o Process engineering and optimization
  • A commitment to building a culture around diversity, accountability and trust, achieving service excellence.
  • Detail-oriented and critical thinking to make inferences, including the ability to work under pressure, multi-task and adhere to strict timelines in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills to liaise with senior management and other internal and external stakeholders.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Canada, and will be subject to a criminal background check.
