Girls’ Math Team Canada Celebrates Success at 2026 EGMO
Ottawa, ON – The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is proud to announce the results of Girls’ Math Team Canada at the 2026 European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), held from April 9th to April 15th in Bordeaux, France.
Representing Canada were:
- Zhiwei (Cora) Cong (Appleby College, Grade 12), Honourable Mention (one point shy of a Bronze Medal!)
- Riley Jin (West Island College, Grade 10)
- Greta Qu (Mentor College, Grade 11), Silver Medal
- Sophie Zhang (Havergal College, Grade 12), Gold Medal

The EGMO is an international math competition that brings together high school students from around the world. Participants compete in two rigorous exam days, each consisting of three challenging problems that test creativity, problem-solving, and mathematical insight. The Canadian team met the challenge with hard work and a clear passion for mathematics.

This year, Sophie Zhang placed 10th overall, earning a Gold Medal, and Greta Qu finished in the top 50, receiving a Silver Medal. Zhiwei (Cora) Cong was awarded an Honourable Mention after scoring just one point shy of the Bronze Medal cutoff. Altogether, Girls’ Math Team Canada placed 13th overall, tied with one of the French teams.
Beyond individual results, the experience of EGMO reflects the full journey of mathematical competition, including moments of challenge, growth, and discovery. Girls’ Math Team Canada is selected through a rigorous and equitable national process, ensuring that each participant earns their place through demonstrated talent and commitment. The CMS is proud of all team members, who represented Canada with integrity, perseverance, and mutual support.

Participation in EGMO offers a unique opportunity for students to engage with a global mathematical community, develop lasting friendships, and deepen their appreciation for mathematics. The CMS celebrates not only the medals earned, but also the courage and determination shown by every member of the team.
“I was truly inspired by the team’s spirit as they connected with other competitors and explored Bordeaux, and I am so proud of their enthusiasm and courage while attempting difficult problems throughout EGMO. I’m sure that they have made lifelong friends and memories from this experience!” (Emily Ma, Deputy Leader)
“I had an awesome time at the EGMO this year, especially getting to bond with the rest of team Canada along with meeting and reconnecting with girls from all around the world! I loved experiencing many diverse cultures through learning different languages, playing games, trying unique snacks, and exchanging souvenirs. Thank you to Kate and Emily for making this EGMO so memorable and to CMS for bringing us all together and making this experience possible!” (Greta Qu, team member)
“It was an eye-opening experience getting to see a whole new level of math, and I also got to meet many new friends. I learned a lot from other senior team members, and it made me want to work harder and keep improving for next year!” (Riley Jin, team member)
The CMS gratefully acknowledges Jane Street for its generous support, which made Girls’ Math Team Canada’s participation in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad possible.

The CMS also wishes to thank its members, partners, and donors, including the Samuel Beatty Fund, for their support of Girls’ Math Team Canada.
The Samuel Beatty student of this year’s EGMO is Sophie Zhang. Sophie’s Samuel Beatty Report will be published here when available.
Congratulations, Girls’ Math Team Canada!
About the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO)
The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) is an international mathematics competition similar in style to the International Mathematical Olympiad, with two papers taken on consecutive days. Participating countries send teams consisting of four female mathematicians of school age. The EGMO was first held in 2012 in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Canada has been participating in the EGMO since 2018.
About the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS)
The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is the main national organization whose goal is to promote and advance the discovery, learning and application of mathematics. The Society’s activities cover the whole spectrum of mathematics including meetings, research publications, and the promotion of excellence in mathematics competitions that recognize outstanding student achievements. The CMS is a registered non-profit, charitable organization and depends on grants, funding, and generous donations from sponsors, benefactors and community members to be able to carry out its activities.
