Girls Math Team Canada Announced for 2026 EGMO

Ottawa, ON – The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is proud to announce the members of Girls Math Team Canada, who will represent the country at the 2026 European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO). Now in its fifteenth edition, EGMO is a premier international competition that champions excellence in mathematics and supports the development of young women in STEM.

Introducing Girls Math Team Canada for the 2026 EGMO:

  • Zhiwei (Cora) Cong: Grade 12, Appleby College, Oakville, ON;
  • Riley Jin: Grade 10, West Island College, Calgary, AB;
  • Greta Qu: Grade 11, Mentor College, Mississauga, ON;
  • Sophie Zhang: Grade 12, Havergal College, Toronto, ON.

The 2026 EGMO will take place in Bordeaux, France, from April 9 to April 15, 2026. Each team member will compete individually over two days, solving six challenging mathematical problems that test creativity, mastery, and deep problem-solving skills.

Girls Math Team Canada 2026 will be guided by team leader Kateryna Tretiakova (University of Ottawa) and deputy leader Emily Ma (Harvard University). Emily returns to the team after competing at the 2024 EGMO. Together, Kateryna and Emily bring experience and mentorship as the team prepares to compete internationally.

“We are incredibly excited for EGMO this year! Our team brings together a wonderful range of experiences: one returning competitor, two students who have been part of the Canadian math olympic movement and are now making the national team for the first time, and one student who is on the newer side to it all. With this mix, there is plenty of training ahead, but we are thrilled for the girls to experience the strength, camaraderie, and inspiration of the international female mathematics community! Their selection reflects real dedication, and I hope girls across Canada see in this team a reminder that these goals are genuinely within reach when you commit to them.

It is also always great to see alumnae returning on the leadership side—each bringing their own full‑circle story and helping guide the next generation. I know Emily will inspire the girls to strive for mathematical excellence and to represent Canada with pride and confidence!”

– Kateryna Tretiakova, Girls Math Team Canada Leader and CMS EGMO Committee Chair

The CMS gratefully acknowledges the generous support of its exclusive EGMO sponsor, Jane Street, whose commitment helps these talented young mathematicians share their skills on a global stage. We also extend our sincere thanks to the Canadian mathematical community for its continued encouragement and support, which make initiatives like EGMO possible.

About the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO)
The European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) is an international mathematics competition similar in style to the International Mathematical Olympiad, with two papers taken on consecutive days. Participating countries send teams consisting of four female mathematicians of school age. The EGMO was first held in 2012 in Cambridge, United Kingdom.  Canada has been participating in the EGMO since 2018.

About the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS)
The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is the main national organization whose goal is to promote and advance the discovery, learning and application of mathematics. The Society’s activities cover the whole spectrum of mathematics including meetings, research publications, and the promotion of excellence in mathematics competitions that recognize outstanding student achievements. The CMS is a registered non-profit, charitable organization and depends on grants, funding, and generous donations from sponsors, benefactors and community members to be able to carry out its activities.
