Canadian Mathematical Society launches Inclusion in Mathematics Prize

Ottawa, ON – The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce the creation of the Inclusion in Mathematics Prize, a new award recognizing individuals or groups who have made meaningful contributions to fostering a diverse and inclusive math community in Canada.

The prize highlights efforts that strengthen equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across the mathematical sciences. It recognizes initiatives at all levels, from departments and institutions to regional and national efforts, and across all areas of mathematics. In keeping with the evolving nature of EDI work, the prize is designed to acknowledge a broad range of contributions, including those that may not fit within traditional academic frameworks.

The inaugural prize will be awarded in 2026.

The recipient(s) of the Inclusion in Mathematics Prize will be selected by a committee composed of representatives from the CMS Equity, Diversity and Inclusiveness Committee and the CMS Women in Mathematics Committee, based on the strength, merit, and demonstrated impact of the nominated work.

In addition to the prize itself, the CMS will highlight selected nominated initiatives through a “Sharing our Initiatives” event, creating an opportunity to showcase and amplify impactful EDI work taking place across the Canadian mathematical community.

“We hope this prize will elevate the visibility of EDI initiatives across Canada, while fostering meaningful opportunities to learn from and collaborate with one another.”

Dr. Yu-Ru Liu (University of Waterloo), Chair, CMS Women in Mathematics Committee

Nominations for the 2026 Inclusion in Mathematics Prize will be open from April 15 to June 15, 2026. An overview of the nomination process and requirements can be found here by clicking here.

The CMS presents a range of prizes each year to recognize excellence in research, education, and community engagement in mathematics. This new prize reflects the Society’s ongoing commitment to supporting a more inclusive and representative mathematical community in Canada.
