Canada Jay Mathematical Competition (CJMC) 2025 – Results Now Available

Ottawa, ON – The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce the results of the 2025 Canada Jay Mathematical Competition (CJMC).

The CJMC, open to students in grades K-8 with problems based primarily on grades 5-8 curriculum, aims to foster enthusiasm for mathematics, challenge young problem-solvers, and support teachers in enriching their math programme.

This year’s contest was held on November 20 in Canada and the Americas, and on November 21 elsewhere in the world.

Highlights

  • Participation: 3694 students took part in this year’s CJMC, from across Canada and abroad.
  • Performance snapshot: The mean score was 44.6 out of 80; the median was 43. The top quartile achieved 59/80 or better.
  • Perfect scores: 178 students earned a perfect score of 80/80 – congratulations to all!

About the Canada Jay Mathematical Competition
The Canada Jay Mathematical Competition (CJMC) is open to students in grades K-8, with questions based primarily on grade 5-8 curriculum. This competition has been created by mathematicians from across Canada. It was renamed in 2022 from the original name Canadian Mathematical Gray Jay Competition (CMGC) to match the renaming of the Canada Jay bird.

The problems are meant to be a fun fall activity for students and teachers to complement their math curriculum and build students’ problem solving skills. The CJMC offers engaging problems that allow for discussion after the competition and get students excited about math. The competition has 15 questions which take place over 90 minutes. It consists of 3 blocks of 5 questions with an increasing level of difficulty from beginning to end.

About the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS)
The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is the main national organization whose goal is to promote and advance the discovery, learning and application of mathematics. The Society’s activities cover the whole spectrum of mathematics including meetings, research publications, and the promotion of excellence in mathematics competitions that recognize outstanding student achievements. The CMS is a registered non-profit, charitable organization and depends on grants, funding, and generous donations from sponsors, benefactors and community members to be able to carry out its activities.
