2025 IMO: Introducing Math Team Canada

Ottawa, ON – The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to introduce the six students who will represent Canada at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), to be held this summer on the Sunshine Coast, Australia from July 10 to 20, 2025.

The students were selected for Math Team Canada 2025 based on their outstanding performance in national math contests and training camps, including the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) and the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO). The Canadian team for the 2025 IMO is made up of: 

  • Ryan Bai, Grade 12, Ingenius STEAM (Redwood City, CA, USA)
  • Warren Bei, Grade 12, Rockridge Secondary School (West Vancouver, BC)
  • Tiger Li, Grade 9, TT Math School (Markham, ON)
  • Zhekai Shen, Grade 11, Elite Preparatory Academy (Hopatcong, NJ, USA)
  • Leo Wu, Grade 10, Bayview Secondary School (Richmond Hill, ON)
  • Ming Yang, Grade 12, Brophy College Preparatory (Phoenix, AZ, USA)

They will compete against the best young mathematicians from over 100 countries in the world’s most renowned math competition for high school students.

The team will be accompanied by a group of mentors and coaches, including:

  • Team Leader – Victor Rong (University of Toronto)
  • Deputy Leader – Eric Shen (Harvard University)
  • Observer – Howard Halim (Modal Labs)

Before traveling to Australia, the team will meet at Banff International Research Station (BIRS) where they will take part in a training camp with trainers Howard Halim (Modal Labs), Emily Ma (Harvard University), Victor Rong (University of Toronto), Eric Shen (Harvard University), Ben Yang, and Miranda Zhao (MIT).

About the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the world championship high school mathematics competition. The IMO began in 1959 in Romania with seven participating countries. Math Team Canada expects to compete against the world’s best students from over 100 countries in the 66th IMO. Canada has earned 42 gold, 71 silver, 97 bronze medals, and 21 honourable mentions since first competing in 1981.
