Tenure Track Position in Pedagogy Research in Mathematics

Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science at Ryerson University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Mathematics with concentration in Mathematical Pedagogy at the Assistant Professor level, commencing on July 1, 2021, subject to final budgetary approval. This position is an integral part of the Faculty of Science Strategic Plan to create a world-class group in Science Education Research, beginning with a cluster of four positions, one in each of Computer Science, Chemistry/Biology, Mathematics and Physics departments.

The successful candidate will: engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity and service duties while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities; pursue a strong, innovative research program that is externally funded and that produces cutting-edge, high quality results; contribute to our undergraduate and graduate programs through teaching and student supervision; apply suitable research findings in mathematical pedagogy to make measurable improvements to our undergraduate program in the following areas: 1) Student retention (drop/fail rate) and 2) Quality of course delivery;  conduct workshops/clinics to help improve the teaching quality of our graduate students/TAs or any member of the department who so desires; engage in the academic life of the Department, the Faculty, and the University.

The successful candidate must hold an earned PhD in Mathematics or Mathematical Education and it is expected that at least one graduate level university degree will be in Mathematics. The department will also be looking for:

  • demonstrated potential for teaching excellence at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, as evidenced by a teaching dossier that should include a teaching philosophy statement, and any evidence of the following, where applicable: experience with course and curriculum review and/or development, examples of best practices in pedagogy, including effective use of classroom technology and any experience with experiential learning, sample syllabi, strong teaching evaluations, a commitment to student training and professional development, teaching awards, and other relevant achievements in teaching;
  • experience or the potential for teaching a variety of university-level courses in Mathematics;
  • strong, emerging scholarly research in the area of mathematical education that is current, innovative and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research related awards and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline.
  • commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
  • an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the Department, Faculty and the University through collegial service.

Experience with curriculum development and pedagogical innovation will be considered significant assets.

We particularly encourage applications in fields that would successfully complement pedagogical research in other areas of science, including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Physics.

Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics has 23 tenured and tenure-track faculty members. Research interests include Applied Statistics, Discrete Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Fluid Dynamics, and Mathematical Biology. The department has a strong Master’s program in Applied Mathematics, a recently created PhD program and vibrant undergraduate programs in Financial Mathematics, and in Mathematics and its Applications.
