The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the areas of data science or analytics, spatial-temporal statistics, statistical/machine learning, multivariate statistics, or big data. The successful candidate will actively participate in the newly established University of Guelph Master of Data Science (MDS) program. The anticipated start date of the position is August 1, 2022.
The successful applicant should or will have a Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics, or a closely related area. They should have an established record of, or potential to develop, an independent program of research with global impact funded by Canadian and international agencies (e.g., NSERC, CIHR, NIH, SHHRC) leading to international recognition. This program will be in the area of mathematical and statistical approaches to data science and/or theoretical, methodological, or ethical foundations of data science. Applicants should have experience in the applications of data science and willingness to collaborate with researchers in other disciplines.
Applicants must have the inspiration and ability to teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students. They will be expected to develop and offer graduate courses related to data science, to broadly contribute to the teaching mandate of the department at the undergraduate level including courses in both the Mathematical Sciences major and service courses, and to supervise students in graduate and undergraduate research.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is housed in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Guelph. We are an active and dynamic group of researchers and educators working in a wide range of fields in mathematics and statistics. We are proud to offer both undergraduate and graduate degree programs to help prepare students for careers in Mathematical Science. Our department is hosting the newly launched professional Master of Data Science program which, beyond standard data science skills, is dedicated to handling data in space and time, understanding data ethics throughout the data life cycle and developing strong communication skills for knowledge transfer/dissemination.
