Monash University’s Faculty of Science is at the forefront of innovation in research, teaching and in forging partnerships with industry, government and individual supporters. The Faculty’s five schools accommodate biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and earth, atmospheric and environmental sciences, and offer programs across a large and diverse range of disciplines. Ten schools from other faculties contribute to science teaching at all levels.

With close collaborations with a number of other schools and departments, the School of Mathematics has strong linkages with external entities including the CSIRO, the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, and the National Australia Bank, along with numerous research institutes and universities globally. The School provides undergraduate teaching for students in the Faculty of Science as well as postgraduate training in its key research areas. It is multidisciplinary with active groups in algebra and discrete mathematics, analysis and geometry, applied mathematics, financial mathematics, fluid dynamics, statistics and stochastic processes, numerical analysis and scientific computing, operations research, and mathematical biology.

The Head of School, Mathematics is an exciting appointment which comes with the mandate to drive the ongoing international profile of mathematics and interdisciplinary research and to lead traditional and innovative pedagogical activities to optimize the student experience. You will provide high-level strategic leadership to the 80 School staff by managing, administering and advancing excellence in teaching, research and professional activities. In addition to your active engagement in specialist research areas consistent with the Faculty’s research strategy, you will also foster research excellence through procuring competitive research grants; leading significant research projects; and providing outstanding leadership in teaching, curriculum development and research training.

Monash is keen to meet with mathematicians with outstanding scholarly records of an international standard including significant publications in the highest impact journals. You should demonstrate a consistent record of high level research engagement and productivity, and an enduring commitment to programs of research. You will need highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to effectively liaise with academics, mentor and develop staff, and represent and advocate for the School as a contributing member on boards and committees. Recognized as a leading authority in Mathematics, it is expected that you will hold a doctoral qualification.
