The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Calgary invites applications from outstanding candidates for a full-time, tenure-track position in the area of Biostatistics and Health Data Science. This appointment is at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date commencing on or after July 1, 2020.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in biostatistics or statistics (or equivalent), a research interest in data science applied to health data, and a demonstrated commitment to high-quality teaching and supervision at the undergraduate and graduate level. A proven record of research excellence commensurate with their stage of career development and demonstrated potential for attracting and sustaining peer-reviewed external funding are also required. We are particularly interested in applicants who would strengthen our data science activities in the area of health data analytics.
The University of Calgary is a centre for innovation and training in data science, providing a range of opportunities for the successful candidate to engage in collaborative research and teaching. The new interdisciplinary Professional Data Science Certificate and Diploma (https://science.ucalgary.ca/data-science) has its heart in the Faculty of Science (in the departments of Mathematics & Statistics and Computer Science) but also has diploma streams in Health Data Science & Biostatistics and in Business Analytics, with others in the pipeline. Across the Faculty of Science, there are opportunities for collaboration with colleagues in Computer Science, Chemistry and Biology working on data-intensive health science research.
The biostatistics research group in the Department combines a measure and diversity of expertise that is unique in Canada, spanning a broad range of computational, applied and theoretical topics including copula models, survival analysis, Monte Carlo inference, systems biology, and high dimensional data analysis. It is involved in collaborations with other scientists and engaged in statistical consulting. A majority of these research collaborations deal with some aspects of human and animal health, such as ophthalmology, epidemiology, oncology, physiology, genetics, toxicology, and randomized clinical trials. The group has a close affiliation with the University’s Cumming School of Medicine; its seven institutes provide invaluable sources of real problems and data for biostatistics research. The group is also closely affiliated with the University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Alberta Health Services, which are the home institutes of two group members with cross-appointments with Mathematics and Statistics. They play an important role in linking our group with colleagues in the areas of biomedical and veterinary research and public health, as does the new graduate specialization in Biostatistics (see https://science.ucalgary.ca/mathematics-statistics/future-students/graduate/programs), which offers the opportunity to work with highly motivated graduate trainees in an interdisciplinary setting.
