Nomination Requirements
Candidates
- Have made excellent contributions to mathematical research, teaching, or exposition.
- Have distinguished themselves in service to Canada’s mathematical community.
- The candidate must be a member of the CMS in the year nominated, and must have been a member in the previous year.
- Candidates may not nominate themselves.
- The CMS aims to promote and celebrate diversity in the broadest sense. We strongly encourage nominations for outstanding colleagues regardless of race, gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation.
Nominators
- Must be a current member of the CMS.
- Are a present or past colleague, or collaborator with direct knowledge of the candidate's contribution.
- Provides a nomination letter of not more than 500 words explaining how the candidate meets the selection criteria.
- Provides a citation of not more than 75 words describing the candidate's accomplishments.
- Provides the names of two additional CMS members (other than the Nominator, and not on the Selection Committee) who support the nomination and have agreed to provide recommendation letters by the deadline. At least one of these two must be a current Fellow.
- Must not submit more than two Fellow nominations in a calendar year.
- Must not be a member of the current Fellow Selection Committee.
Next cycle: 2027 Fellowships.
Society Leaders
President-Elect: If not already a Fellow, the CMS President-elect is made a Fellow upon election.
Distinguished Award Recipients: Recipients of the following CMS awards shall automatically be invited to become Fellows: the David Borwein Distinguished Career Award and the Graham Wright Award for Distinguished Service.
Others: Recipients of the following CMS awards, who have also served the CMS as Vice-president or Chair of a CMS Committee (not including sub-committees) or as editors-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Mathematics, the Canadian Mathematical Bulletin or the Canadian Mathematical Communications, shall automatically be invited to become Fellows: the Adrien Pouliot Award, the Excellence in Teaching Award, the Jeffery-Williams Prize, the Krieger-Nelson Prize, and the Coxeter-James Prize.
Selection Process
A call for nominations opens the nomination period from February 1 to March 31 each year. Nominations and supporters’ letters are collected during this time. Only nominations that meet the stated requirements by the deadline stated will be considered for selection.
Each year the CMS Executive Committee provides a guideline for the number of Fellows to be selected.
The Selection Committee (see below) chooses Fellows bearing in mind this guideline, diversity of every kind, and the quality and quantity of the nominations.
Those members who are chosen by the Selection Committee are invited by the CMS President to become new Fellows of the CMS.
Recognition of new CMS Fellows usually takes place during the banquet at the CMS Winter Meeting.

Selection Committee
The Selection Committee will consist of five (5) Fellows who are current CMS members. Members shall normally serve two-year terms, which shall be staggered.
The CMS President will automatically become an ex officio member of the committee, starting in January of the last year of their term, and then continuing past the end of the presidency to a full two year term (first year as a regular committee member and second year as Chair).
The CMS Executive Committee will appoint the new member(s) of the Selection Committee in December of each year.
Nomination Retention
An individual who is nominated and is not selected a Fellow will remain an active nominee for a further two years.
