Discrete tomography--a brief survey of recent results


New techniques in high resolution transmission electron microscopy can be used to register the number of atoms in a crystalline structure lying on each line parallel to certain special directions. For each such direction, the corresponding image is called a discrete X-ray. The main goal of discrete tomography is to reconstruct the structure from discrete X-rays taken in several directions.

This very young subject (really only about five years old) has already yielded substantial results. The talk will survey some of these, focussing on joint work of the speaker with Peter Gritzmann and Dieter Prangenberg.
