The Fields Institute - Position opening
The Fields Institute has an opening for a half-time position as Industry Liaison, starting July 1, 2016. This is a one-year position, currently funded by the Institute Innovation Platform NSERC grant, with the possibility of renewal for another three-year term pending approval of funding. The Industry Liaison will facilitate connections between academic research mathematicians and their counterparts in industry. The Liaison's duties will include organizing workshops, job fairs, and events with the aim to develop a scientific environment that nurtures connections and collaborations between academic researchers and scientists in industry.

The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences
Job Title: Associate Director for Industry Liaison
Salary range: $60,000 to $75,000 – half time position, or equivalent teaching release
Starting date: July 1, 2016
Term of position: one year, renewable to another three-year term pending on approval of funding.
Accountability: The Associate Director for Industry Liaison coordinates with the Deputy Director and reports to the Director of the Fields Institute.
Description: The Associate Director for Industry Liaison will be expected to:
- organize workshops at the Fields Institute focused on solving problems in industrial mathematics,
- act as a liaison between academic research mathematicians and their counterparts in industries to which the mathematical sciences can contribute, serve as a resource for academic mathematicians who are seeking to develop connections with industry, and work to develop a scientific environment which nurtures collaboration between academic researchers and scientists in industry,
- set up job fairs and other activities which facilitate networking and communication between graduate and postdoctoral level researchers in the mathematical sciences and potential employers in industry,
- coordinate with the Institute Innovation Platform Industrial Advisory Board and with the Industry Liaison counterparts at the Fields Institute's sister mathematics institutes PIMS and the CRM,
- contribute to the Institute's development of proposals for research and/or innovation involving mathematical sciences and its applications in industry, and
- report on grant programs to the Fields Institute which are directed to research in industrial mathematics.
In all the duties above, the Associate Director for Industry Liaison will be assisted by a part-time Industrial Liaison Officer, in addition to the regular resources of the Fields Institute for event organization and management.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mathematical sciences or a related area, and possess outstanding communication and organizational skills. Preference will be given to candidates who, in addition to academic experience, have some experience working with the private sector.
