The Mathematical Sciences Department is responsible for both teaching and research in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at Stellenbosch University. The Mathematics Division is keen to strengthen its research in existing active research groups, in particular, Algebra and Number Theory, Analysis and Topology, Discrete Mathematics, and Foundations of Mathematics (more information is available on our webpage). Suitable candidates from any area of Mathematics that would enhance these research groups will be considered.

Duties:

  • Active research and publication;
  • advising and supervising postgraduate students;
  • undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of Mathematics modules;
  • interacting with and enhancing the activities of one of the research groups in the Mathematics Division.

Requirements:

  • PhD in Mathematics (or a PhD submitted);
  • a research interest in any branch of Mathematics that will strengthen the current research groups in the Mathematics Division;
  • a growing track record of publication in internationally recognised mathematics journals and participation in local and international conferences;
  • ability to conduct independent research;
  • strong commitment to teaching and student supervision;
  • ability to teach large undergraduate classes;
  • sound communicative skills in Afrikaans and/or English.

Recommendations:

  • Existing international research contacts;
  • ability to set up new undergraduate and postgraduate modules;
  • willingness to learn Afrikaans and English.

Commencement of duties: 1 January 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter
