The Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Learning and Teaching Centre at the University of Victoria invite applications for a Senior Instructor position to commence July 1, 2010.

Applicants will have a strong commitment to student success and to faculty development in math pedagogy, the ability to teach a wide range of Mathematics and Statistics courses at first and second year levels and experience in best practices in teaching mathematics in university or college. The successful candidate will also have a proven record of improving recruitment and retention in mathematics courses in higher education.

Duties will include: creating and implementing methods for helping students succeed in mathematics courses at UVic (whatever their chosen field); developing and organizing tutorial sessions to better meet student and faculty needs; organizing, coordinating and supervising the Mathematics and Statistics Assistance Centres in collaboration with the relevant faculties (such as Engineering and Science) and other professional staff in the Learning Commons; the hiring, training and supervision of TA's and others to support student learning; consultation and evaluation of pedagogical issues in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics; and consultation across the university regarding issues of numeracy. The successful applicant will be expected to: engage in teaching and learning scholarship in the area of math pedagogy; teach two courses each year in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics; give workshops in relevant areas through the Learning and Teaching Centre; engage in various outreach activities; be enthusiastic about, and enjoy, teaching math to non-specialists; and to provide related service to the University.

This is a faculty position. Applicants must have at least a Master's degree in Mathematics, Statistics or a related discipline, although there is a strong preference for applicants with a Ph.D. The initial appointment is for a term of three years. A continuing re-appointment is considered after seven years. In addition, there is the future possibility to become a Teaching Professor. Applicants should submit: a cover letter detailing their interest in, and experience pertaining to, the position; a curriculum vitae; and a teaching dossier that outlines their approach to/philosophy of teaching and learning, indicates their teaching experience, documents their success in improving recruitment and retention, and includes samples of instructional materials (hardcopy or online) developed to help students succeed (particularly in non-math disciplines).
