CALVIN DENG AWARDED SUN LIFE FINANCIAL CUP

Canadian Mathematical Open Winner Recognized for Perfect Score

L-R: Bill Sands (University of Calgary), Calvin Deng, Paul Boundy (Sun Life Financial)

OTTAWA, Ontario — The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) and Sun Life Financial jointly presented Sun Life Financial Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO) winner Calvin Deng with the Sun Life Financial Cup in Calgary, Alberta. Deng, a Canadian-born student attending North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, placed first in the CMO with a perfect score of 35 points.

The CMO is Canada’s premier national advanced mathematics competition, staged each year by the CMS. This year’s competition was written by 80 students, who were selected to write the competition based on their scores from the Canadian Open Math Challenge (COMC) and the Sun Life Financial Repêchage Competition.

“Calvin’s performance in the CMO was exceptional and his perfect score is proof of his level of mathematical knowledge and skill,” said Chair of the CMS Competitions Committee, Bill Sands, who joined Boundy in presenting the cup. “He is a welcome member of Math Team Canada.”

Calvin Deng’s perfect score on the CMO landed him one of six coveted spots on Math Team Canada 2012 and the opportunity to travel to Mar del Plata in July to compete in the 53rd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), at which he earned a gold medal.
