Students' early struggles with math count later on (September 1)
CMS President Jacques Hurtubise spoke with the Globe and Mail regarding the report released by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) on Monday August 30. The report tracked student-by-student results on standardized math tests administered in Grades 3, 6, and 9 and found that 71 per cent of students who failed to meet standards in the earlier grades failed to meet standards again in high school. More  

IMU 2010 prize winners announced (August 26)
The winners of the 2010 International Mathematical Union Prizes have been announced. Of special note is Louis Nirenberg, first recipient of the Chern Medal Award, which recognizes lifetime outstanding achievements in the field of mathematics. Nirenberg was the recipient of the CMS 1987 Jeffrey-Williams Prize. The full list of prize winners can be viewed here.

Christiane Rousseau elected Vice-President of IMU (August 24)
Christiane Rousseau of the Université de Montreal has been elected a Vice-President of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) for the period 2011-2014. Christiane is the first Canadian to hold this office. Christiane is an active member of the CMS, a former CMS president and the recipient of the 2009 Graham Wright Award for Distinguished Service. More   

Miroslav Lovric to Receive CMS 2010 Adrien Pouliot Award (August 11)
The CMS is pleased to announce that Miroslav Lovric from McMaster University is the recipient of the 2010 Adrien Pouliot Award. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant and sustained contributions to mathematics education in Canada. More   

International Congress of Mathematics (August 9)
The International Congress of Mathematics will be held in Hyderabad, India from August 19-27. The CMS will host a reception at the ICM on August 21 to honour the 2010 Fields Medalists and the recipients of the Gauss Prize, Nevanlinna Prize, and the Chern Medal Award. The CMS gratefully acknowledges the support of Fields, PIMS, and CRM for this event. More   

Math Team Canada brings home Gold (July 13)
A team of six Canadian high school students have placed 13th overall at the 51st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Astana, Kazakhstan from July 5 to July 14. The team competed against students from 96 other countries and was awarded two gold, one silver and two bronze medals, and one honourable mention. More   

Thousands participate in Canada's national student math challenge (July 12)
In November 2009, 8,400 students from across Canada and abroad competed for top honours in the 2009 Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC). Nine students earned top honours, sixteen students were named provincial winners, and almost 140 other students were awarded medals. More   

A Hard Day's Math with Jason Brown (Jun 21)
This year’s CMS Summer Meeting in Fredericton, NB opened on a high note with Professor Jason Brown’s public lecture entitled “A Hard Day’s Math – The Connections between Mathematics and Music.” Jason and his band performed during the welcome reception, making it the first CMS meeting ever to see mathematicians dancing up a storm.
