Sun Life Financial CMO Results

OTTAWA, Ontario — The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2011 Sun Life Financial Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO), now in its 43rd year.

The three top winners are:

  • 1st Prize and the Sun Life Financial Cup: Mariya Sardarli, Strathcona High School, Edmonton, AB
  • 2nd Prize: Calvin Deng, William G. Enloe High School, Raleigh, NC (Canadian citizen)
  • 3rd Prize: Alex Song, Detroit Country Day Middle School, Beverly Hills, MI (Canadian citizen)

In addition, six students have received honourable mentions: Susan Sun, West Vancouver Secondary School, West Vancouver, BC; Yuzhou Chen, Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate Institute, Agincourt, ON; Hunter Spink, Western Canada High School, Calgary, AB; James Rickards, Colonel By Secondary School, Gloucester, ON; Matthew Brennan, Upper Canada College, Toronto, ON; and Yi Liu, York Mills Collegiate Institute, Toronto, ON.

“I am pleased to congratulate the CMO winners on their outstanding performance,” said Jacques Hurtubise, President of the Canadian Mathematical Society. “To achieve these high results on an advanced national competition requires a great level of dedication, hard work, and talent.”

The Sun Life Financial CMO is Canada’s premier national advanced mathematics competition and is staged by the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS). Students are invited to participate based on their results in the Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) and other competitions. The 81 students who wrote this year’s competition represent the top mathematical talent in Canada.

“The CMO provides students with the opportunity to enhance and develop their problem solving skills and expand their mathematical knowledge. All the students who have been part of this unique and challenging experience deserve congratulations," said Dr. Kalle Karu, Chair of the CMS Canadian Mathematical Olympiad Committee.
