Subject to final budgetary approval, the department of Computer Science and Mathematics, Nipissing University, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Mathematics, beginning July 1, 2002. The successful candidate will have a completed PhD and a demonstrated ability for excellence in both research and undergraduate teaching. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The current salary range for Assistant Professor is $51,396 - $73,198.

The department is committed to active scholarship in mathematics, and, while preference will be given to candidates with a research specialty in Geometric Topology and/or Dimension Theory (or a field closely related to these), strong candidates in other areas will also be considered.

The department is currently revising and expanding its BA and BSc mathematics programs. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses, and to contribute to the department in other ways, which may include the supervision of senior undergraduate research projects. Strong computing skills, or a keen interest in the use of computer technology in theoretical or applied mathematics, will be considered an asset.

Nipissing University is located in a beautiful natural setting on an escarpment overlooking Lake Nipissing in North Bay. The city, which is located 3.5 hours from Toronto has a population of 60,000 and is a major center of culture activity in Northeastern Ontario. The department of Computer Science and Mathematics, Nipissing University, invites applications for two positions beginning July 1, 2002. The first position is tenure-track and the second is a limited term (three year position).

In order to eventually receive tenure, the successful applicant for the tenure-track position will be required to have a Ph.D. degree. As a result doctoral candidates or those with completed doctorates in Computer Science are particularly encouraged to apply. Candidates with a doctorate degree in any other field, especially mathematics, will also be considered as long as they can clearly demonstrate their ability to teach computer science classes at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum. For the limited term position a Ph.D. in Computer Science is likewise preferred, but not required. For both positions, we will be looking for candidates with a strong commitment to teaching excellence, superior communications skills and potential for a strong research program. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Computer Science is a new program at Nipissing University and the successful candidates will have many opportunities to participate in shaping the direction of the program. A new Information Technology Center opened in the fall of 2000, featuring state-of-the-art hardware, software and space for teaching and research. The successful candidates for the positions should be able to teach within at least two of the following four fields; software engineering, soft computing, computer graphics, theory of computing.

In addition, candidates will have the opportunity to direct upper year Honours students in areas of Computer Science which coincide with their own research interests.
