    Tenure-Track Position in Statistics

Assistant Professor of Statistics – Joint Position in Mathematics & Statistics and the Faculty's Natural Sciences Programs

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, together with the Natural Sciences Program, Faculty of Science, seek outstanding candidates for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level.

Qualifications include a Ph.D. in Statistics, Bio-statistics, or a closely related field with a focus on applications to the natural sciences. The candidate should have training and experience in interdisciplinary science and research, strong verbal and writing skills, demonstrated ability to lead a dynamic, independent, productive research program, demonstrated ability to obtain research funding, and supervise graduate students in statistics. Postdoctoral experience would be a definite asset.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach courses in both statistics and the natural sciences, contributing to our programs in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and in the Natural Sciences Program at the University of Calgary. A flexible, innovative approach to teaching in novel and non-traditional manners is a requirement. Since the position includes both teaching and research responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to recruit and supervise graduate students. Strong and enthusiastic contributions will be expected in both the teaching and research portfolios.

This is an excellent opportunity to develop a vigorous and independent externally-funded research program within a dynamic and collaborative environment. A competitive salary and an attractive start-up package are available. The candidate will be expected to apply for extramural support from national/provincial agencies to sustain their research program.

The Department has an established expertise in statistical research and is enthusiastically developing links with other relevant research groups in the Faculties of Science, Medicine, and Veterinarian Medicine at the University and the surrounding community. Increasing scholarly capacity will help the University of Calgary meet its strategic goal to become one of Canada's top five research universities by 2016, where innovative teaching and groundbreaking research go hand in hand, and where we fully engage the communities we both serve and lead. The strategy is called Eyes High, inspired by the university's Gaelic motto, which translates as 'I will lift up my eyes.'

Calgary, Canada's fastest growing major city, offers a vibrant, multicultural and family-oriented environment with a population of more than 1,000,000. Situated near the Rocky Mountains, Banff National Park and Lake Louise, Calgary offers great quality of life and outstanding recreational activities.
