MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OF NEWFOUNDLAND
DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS

Assistant Professor, Tenure Track | Canada Research Chair – Tier II
Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) invites applications for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) - Tier II, in the area of Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing. This will be a tenure track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vibrant independent research program in the core disciplines of numerical analysis and scientific computing while engaging in interdisciplinary research which builds upon existing collaborations between the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the Department of Earth Sciences, and the Faculty of Engineering at MUN. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate teaching activities in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics as well as make academic service contributions.

The Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing group at MUN is active and growing. The recently funded AARMS Collaborative Research Group in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing (www.math.mun.ca/anasc) and collaborative efforts such as the Computational Applied Geophysics group provide support and structure for our activities. A new numerical analyst will join the department during the summer of 2014, in addition to the new position created by this CRC chair.

Current areas of expertise in the Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing group include the numerical solution of partial differential equations including adaptive mesh generation, multigrid methods, computational fluid dynamics, inverse problems and large scale PDE constrained optimization problems. Of particular interest are the increasing demands of problems in geophysics and engineering which drive the development and analysis of novel approximation techniques particularly suited to readily available and emerging high performance computing resources.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics or related field awarded within the past 10 years. Applicants must also demonstrate excellence or potential for excellence in both teaching and research.

The position is subject to final budgetary approval, and the individual selected will be subject to review and final approval by the CRC secretariat. Details of the Canada Research Chairs program can be found at www.chairs.gc.ca.

The closing date for applications will be August 15, 2014. Candidates should submit a Curriculum Vitae, a description of research and teaching interests; and the names and addresses (include e-mail) of at least three referees. Applications should be sent to:
