Giving Opportunities at the CMS

Enhancing Canada's innovative capacity - The CMS provides a variety of programs and opportunities for study, enrichment, scholarship and collaboration for students, educators, researchers and partnering with the academic community and industry. The Society welcomes donations to assist with the operation of these activities as outlined below.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Our goal is to encourage interest in the study of Mathematics at the secondary school level and provide enrichment opportunities for post secondary and graduate students through the following activities:

Mathematics Competitions

  • The CMS administers the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge which annually attracts over 6,000 participants
  • The Society organizes the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad, Canada's premier annual national mathematics competition for high school students
  • The CMS selects and trains Canada's team of gifted high school students to travel to the yearly world championship of mathematics - the International Mathematical Olympiad

Education Activities

  • CMS Math Camps
Currently there are 13 regional camps (at least one in each province) and a National Camp. The Math Camps have been highly successful, attracting over 3,000 participants since the program's inception in 1999.
  • Math in Moscow Program
In partnership with NSERC, the CMS offers three scholarships annually to Canadian undergraduate students registered in a mathematics or computer science program to attend a semester at the Independent University of Moscow. The Program provides a fifteen-week-long research experience for students, not only with other mathematically talented and highly motivated undergraduates but, with some of the world's leading mathematicians.
  • Adrien Pouliot Award – recognizes individuals or teams of individuals who have made significant and sustained contributions to mathematics education in Canada, including such as community outreach programs, the development of new programs in either an academic or an industrial setting, promotion of mathematics to the general public, etc.
  • CMS Excellence in Teaching Award – recognizes recipient's proven excellence as a teacher at the undergraduate level as exemplified by unusual effectiveness in the classroom and/or commitment and dedication to teaching and to students

Educational Publications

  • Crux Mathematicorum
The CMS publishes this highly respected problem-solving journal which provides unique and challenging mathematical problems for teachers and students at the senior secondary and undergraduate levels.

RESEARCH AND COLLABORATION

The Society plays a leading role in providing networking opportunities at its semi-annual meetings and recognizing research efforts as follows.

General Operations
Funds used for the day to day administrative operations of the Society

Research Activities

  • Prize lectureships – research awards
The CMS believes that research and collaboration are important elements in developing Canada's innovative capacity.
    • Jeffery-Williams Prize - recognizes mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions to mathematical research
    • Coxeter-James Prize - awarded to young mathematicians who have made an outstanding contribution to mathematical research
    • Kreiger-Nelson Prize - recognizes outstanding research by a female mathematician
    • Doctoral Prize - recognizes outstanding performance by a doctoral student who graduated from a Canadian university

Research Journals

  • Canadian Journal of Mathematics and the Canadian Mathematical Bulletin
  • G. de B. Robinson Award - recognizes the publication of excellent papers in the Canadian Journal of Mathematics and the Canadian Mathematical Bulletin and encourages the submission of the highest quality papers to these journals.

Electronic Services
The CMS website provides an increasing and valuable source of research and educational materials for the Canadian and International mathematical communities.

RECOGNIZING ACHIEVEMENTS

The CMS believes that it is important to recognize scholarship, research, excellence in teaching and contributions to the study and promotion of Mathematics in Canada. The Society has established a number of awards for outstanding achievement in research and education. We desire to create new prizes in such areas as theoretical computer science.

Distinguished Awards

  • Distinguished Service Award – recognizes individuals who have made sustained and significant contributions to the Canadian mathematical community and, in particular, to the Canadian Mathematical Society
  • David Borwein Distinguished Career Award – recognizes individuals who have made an exceptional, broad, and continued contribution to Canadian mathematics

ENDOWED FUNDS

The CMS has established several funds to be administered as endowments:

  • The CMS Endowment Fund
A portion of the annual income supports prizes and scholarships for competitions, research, education, etc.
  • The CMS Mathematical Olympiads Fund
A portion of the annual income supports the Mathematical Olympiads Program in Canada
  • The David Borwein Distinguished Career Award Fund
Revenue from this fund is used to recognize individuals that have made exceptional broad and continued contributions to Canadian mathematics
