Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge

The COMC is sponsored by
Sun Life Financial

The Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) is Canada’s premier national mathematics competition that is open to any student with an interest in mathematics. The purpose of the Sun Life Financial COMC is to encourage students to explore, discover, and learn more about mathematics and problem solving. The competition serves to provide teachers with a unique student enrichment activity during the fall term.

Approximately the top 50 students from the COMC will be invited to write the Sun Life Financial Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO).

Message for Teachers:

Official marks and awards have been released! Teachers can access the marks and awards earned by each student through the same school accounts used to register for the competition. Downloadable PDF certificates for award winners and quartile-based performance are also online.

Mailing: We will be mailing (to the teachers) mounted certificates for students whose performance is exceptional. Those schools will also receive mounted certificates for posting in the school. As well, Prize Draw winners will receive their prizes through mail to the school.

Eligibility:

Official contestants:

In order to classify as an official contestant and be eligible to win awards, students must be:

  1. Less than 19 years old as of June 30, 2011
  2. Registered in full-time attendance at an elementary or secondary school or CÉGEP, and have been so registered since January 1, 2011.

CMO Note: Although the above requirements are the only criteria to be an official contestant for the COMC, students hoping to do exceptionally well at the COMC in order to be invited to write the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO) should also consider the additional criteria necessary to write the CMO.

Unofficial contestants:

Students who do not meet the above requirements are welcome to write the COMC as unofficial competitors.

All contestants:

Students who write the COMC agree to allow the CMS to publish their names and schools when announcing contest results.

Competition Format:

The COMC consists of three sections:

  1. 4 basic questions for 4 marks each;
  2. 4 intermediary questions for 6 marks each; and
  3. 4 advanced questions for 10 marks each;

for a total of 80 marks.

The length of the contest is 2.5 hours. Calculators are not permitted.

Topics to study:

[The following information is also available as a printable PDF, suitable for posting in a classroom]

Most of the problems on the 2011 COMC will be based on the mathematics curriculum taught in secondary schools and CEGEPs. Some questions require a degree of understanding beyond the curriculum. Potential topics include:

  • Euclidean and analytic geometry
  • Trigonometry, including functions, graphs, identities, sine and cosine laws
  • Exponential and logarithmic functions
  • Functional notation
  • Systems of equations
  • Polynomials, including relationships involving the roots of quadratic and cubic equations
  • The remainder theorem
  • Sequences and series
  • Simple counting problems
  • The binomial theorem
  • Elementary number theory, including tests for divisibility, number of divisors, and simple Diophantine equations

Registration:

Registration for the COMC will open September 1. All registrations for the COMC must come from schools. Registration fees are $12 (CDN) per student in Canada and $15 (US) per student for international participants.
