2013 Canadian Mathematical Olympiad winners announced

Calvin Deng, 2013 CMO Winner

OTTAWA, Ontario — The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS), with the support of Sun Life Financial, is pleased to announce the winners of the 45th annual Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO) competition. The top winners are:

1st Prize and Sun Life Financial Cup: Calvin Deng, NC School of Science & Mathematics , Cary, NC
2nd Prize: ZhuoQun (Alex) Song, Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, NH
3rd Prize: Kevin Sun, Naperville Central High School, Naperville, IL

Four students who received honourable mentions are as follows: Alexander Whatley, North Houston Academy, Houston,TX; Richard (Rongxin) Du, Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute, Toronto, ON; Zhiyao (John) Ma, Interlake High School, Bellevue, WA; Jerry (Xiaoze) Wu, Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute, Toronto, ON.

“It is my pleasure to congratulate the winners of this year’s CMO,” said CMS President, Keith Taylor. “Students who do well on the CMO are among the most talented young mathematicians in Canada. Their success in writing such an advanced competition is undoubtedly the result of many hours of preparation and dedication to the study of mathematics.”

The CMO is Canada’s premier national advanced mathematics competition that is staged by the CMS. Students are invited to participate in the CMO based on their scores in the Canadian Open Math Challenge (COMC). Those students who obtain the highest scores on the CMO are often selected to be part of Math Team Canada – a team of six students who represent Canada at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

“The highlight of this year's CMO is the perfect score achieved by Calvin Deng. The other strong performances demonstrate again that our students have the drive to tackle and solve very difficult problems,” said Andrew Adler (British Columbia), Chair of the CMO Committee.
